About this Event

You are cordially invited to join the RINA SA/NT Section for a presentation on the application of anthropometry to ship and submarine design. Anthropometry is the scientific discipline of the measurements andĀ proportionsĀ of the human body. The size and configuration of environments should be matched to the dimensions of the human body and human motion for safety, efficiency, and comfort of users. This is challenging in Naval Architecture where due to the challenges of housing and configuring multiple technical systems within finite space constraints.

Applying anthropometry for design requires an understanding of the data along with the methods and tools to apply it for design. Design for ergonomics requires first defining the user population and the range of that population to be accommodated. The user tasks are identified and used to identify which body dimensions need to be accommodated in the design. This analysis also requires an understanding of biomechanics and the ergonomics analysis of work.

While the discipline of gathering and analysing anthropometric data is well established applying the data for design is complex and requires skills and experience to properly understand the context and to use the tools properly.

Peter Schumacher has a Bachelor of Architectural Studies from Adelaide University, a Bachelor of Industrial Design (first class honours) from the University of South Australia and was awarded his PhD from the Australian National University. He has led industry collaborations in Australia and abroad, in sectors as diverse as mobility, medical and aged care, museums and exhibitions, and defence.

Peter currently leads a project for the Australian Defence Science and Technology Group to examine design and development methods for submarine habitable spaces. The project aims to improve usability, and to apply anthropometry and sleep and fatigue research.
