Event Information:
Conductor Giordano Bellincampi Violin Geneva Lewis Gade Echoes of Ossian Mendelssohn Violin Concerto Bruckner Symphony No.4 'Romantic' The poems attributed to the Gaelic warrior-bard Ossian were staples of the early Romantic movement. One of many in their thrall was Giordano Bellincampi's compatriot, Niels Gade, who wrote an overture which made its 23-year-old composer famous overnight. Gade's admirers included Mendelssohn, whose much-loved concerto will be the APO début of another brilliant young musician, New Zealand-born violinist Geneva Lewis. None of Bruckner's monumental symphonies has a specific programme, but the Fourth is the only one to which he gave a title. A fitting one, too. It is music that evokes German forests, chivalrous deeds and grand heroism.
