Please join us for an evening of contemporary poetry as we celebrate the work of John Yau, Emily Skillings, and Danny Rivera. In collaboration with ANTON KERN GALLERY, this event will be hosted by the museum educator and founder of CON ALTURA, Steve Rivera. Recent literary contributions by these writers will also be available to be signed and purchased.
John Yau is the author of many books of poetry, fiction, and criticism. His most recent collection, Diary of Small Discontents: New & Selected Poems 1974–2024, which will bring together work from half a century of writing, is due to be published in October, 2025. In 2012, he cofounded the online publication Hyperallergic Weekend. He received a Rabkin Prize for his art criticism in 2021, the 2018 Jackson Poetry Prize, which is given annually to an American poet by Poets and Writers, and been recognized by John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, National Endowment of the Arts, Academy of American Poets, New York Foundation of the Arts, and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts for his poetry and fiction.
Emily Skillings is the author of the poetry collection Fort Not (The Song Cave, 2017), which Publishers Weekly called a “fabulously eccentric, hypnotic, and hypervigilant debut.” Her second book, Tantrums in Air, will be published in 2025. Skillings’ recent poems can be found in Poetry, Harper’s, Granta, FOLDER, jubilat, and the New York Review of Books. Skillings is the editor of Parallel Movement of the Hands: Five Unfinished Longer Works by John Ashbery, which was published by Ecco/HarperCollins in 2021. She received her MFA from Columbia University School of the Arts, where she was a Creative Writing Teaching Fellow in 2017. She has taught creative writing at Poets House, Columbia University, The New School, NYU, and through Brooklyn Poets.
Danny Rivera is the author of ANCESTRAL THROAT, a poetry chapbook published by Finishing Line Press in 2021. His poetry and literary criticism have appeared in American Book Review, Western Humanities Review, Washington Square, and other journals. He lives and teaches in Brooklyn.
