About this Event

The acclaimed translator of Cursed Bunny visits Foyles for the London launch of his debut novel, Toward Eternity, a speculative, mind-expanding tale that asks what it means to be human in a world overrun by technology.

In the near-future world of Toward Eternity, a new technological therapy is quickly eradicating cancer. When Yonghun – himself a recipient of nanotherapy – mysteriously vanishes into thin air and then just as suddenly reappears, the event raises disturbing questions. Exploring the nature of intelligence and the unexpected consequences of progress, the meaning of personhood and life, Toward Eternity is a questioning, deeply human novel from a literary star.

Anton Hur was born in Stockholm, Sweden, and was subsequently raised in six different countries on four different continents, including British Hong Kong, Ethiopia, the United States, and Thailand, but spent most of his time in Korea. He has worked as an interpreter and translator for more than two decades, and in 2022 was double-longlisted and shortlisted for the International Booker Prize, the first translator of colour to do so. In 2023, his translation of Bora Chung’s Cursed Bunny was shortlisted for the National Book Awards.

Hur will be in conversation with broadcaster and presenter Simon Savidge. He has co-presented four seasons of Sky Arts Book Club, as well as hosting Sky Arts Live from Hay Festival in 2023. He has judged the Costa Book Awards, Portico Prize and Desmond Elliott Prize. He has appeared on the Booker Prize Live on BBC, recommended books on BBC 5 Live plus hosted Turn Up For The Books on BBC Sounds. His YouTube channel, Savidge Reads, has had over 2 million views.

The event will be followed by an audience Q&A and a book signing. Doors will open from 6:45pm.
