Event Photos

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a complex problem encompassing microbial communities as well as human and animal populations and their shared environment.

Drivers of AMR are not only biomedical but include broader social, cultural, economic and political spheres. Therefore, approaches to tackling AMR need to take into account One-Health, One-World and interdisciplinary perspectives.

Capitalising on multiple areas of expertise within and beyond the University of Glasgow, we have established a network of expertise, Antimicrobial resistance: causes & solutions (ARCS), to build the evidence and capacity required to design an appropriate multipronged response.

To commemorate the World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (18 – 24 November 2022), we will be hosting a symposium tailored to staff and students to initiate a cross-cutting conversation about AMR. We will focus on antibacterial resistance and, through a range of contributions, we will discuss broad-level topics, including molecular mechanisms, transmission at the human-livestock interface, advances in diagnostics and therapeutics, and social, anthropological and political perspectives.

We will also be joined by colleagues from the NHS to hear their first-hand experiences of difficult-to-treat antimicrobial resistant infections in healthcare settings.

We will conclude with a lecture on the discovery of penicillin tailored to students.
