Antigone
The Mid-Pacific School of the Arts is thrilled to present Antigone. At its core, Antigone is about the clash of two values: loyalty to the state vs. loyalty to the gods. The conflict begins at the deaths of Eteocles and Polyneices, sons of King Oedipus. Polyneices fought against his country, while Eteocles fought with his father’s kingdom; each died by the other’s hands. Creon, the new king, as his first official proclamation, states that Eteocles shall receive a solider’s victorious burial, while Polyneices shall be left in the field to rot, unburied. The city’s statesmen support Creon’s decision. Antigone confronts Creon, her uncle, defiantly. The Statesmen begin to wavier in their agreement. Despite all warnings, Antigone secretly performs the ritualistic burial for her brother and is imprisoned awaiting death. Haimon, Antigone’s betrothed and Creon’s son, tries to sway his father. Then, the wise blind prophet, Teiresias appears in the town to warn Creon that his law will lead to his own undoing. Creon finally relents, but in an instance of ill fated timing, he opens the tomb and finds her dead. Out of despair, Haimon and Creon’s wife, Eurydice have by now also killed themselves, and Creon is left in distress and sorrowful. In the end, the city returns Creon to his position.
PLEASE NOTE: Antigone is considered appropriate for ages 13 and up. The production contains mature themes, including discussions of suicide, family conflict, and the struggle between personal beliefs and societal laws.
