About this Event
Join the Wildflower anti-oppression training team as they offer a three-day anti-oppression training. This training aims to examine what being a “good” person really means, how to understand privilege and use it for good, effectively owning and apologizing for your missteps, and strategies for interrupting situations where people are saying or doing things rooted in oppressive ways of being and thinking.
The training aims to be highly interactive, and requires a willingness to self-reflect, sit in discomfort, and work together toward building a better world.
NOTE: Space is very limited in this training as we are anticipating that most spots will go to our new Anemoni peer respite team!!
Wednesday, February 19, 9am to 5pm
Thursday, February 20, 9am to 5pm
Friday, February 21, 9am to 5pm
What can you expect from this training?
Day 1 - Concepts
On the first day, we will look at concepts like privilege, "default design," internalized oppression, and how stereotpes are born in engaging ways that encourage self-exploration. We will also talk about how we know what we know (i.e., how we've each developed our worldview, and influencing factors).
Day 2 - Integration
On day two, we will begin to integrate some of what we talked about on day one into bigger picture conversations. We'll dig a little deeper with what's influencing our different perspectives on the world, look at the common parts shared between different forms of systemic oppression, and discuss intent/impact and what makes a good apology.
Day 3 - Application
On day three, we'll learn about different interrupting strategies (including how to interrupt in situations volatile situations as well as in situations where you want or need to maintain your relationship). We'll also talk about the differences between (and utility of) calling in and calling out, and get lots of practice in putting those strategies to work. We'll conclude the training by looking at, discussing, and expanding upon direct actions we can take to change the world.
Throughout all three days, we will make use of small group work, individual worksheets, and video clips to bring everything to life. You can even expect to join in on a quiz-style gameshow (with prizes!) after lunch on day 2 based on the history timelines we will provide.
