About this Event

Third Place Books welcomes local authors Georgia McDade, Jaye Ware, Kibibi Monié, Minnie Collins, and Monique Franklin to our Seward Park store for readings from the anthology Black Writers Unmasked, an anthology of poems, short stories, and essays showcasing the work of members of the Pacific Northwest's African-American Writers' Alliance. This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required in advance.

Copies of Black Writers Unmasked will be available for purchase at the store. This event will include a public signing and time for audience Q&A. Sustain our author series by purchasing a copy of the featured book!

About the authors. . .

Minnie A. Collins is poet and author of The Purple Wash (2012), Palm Power: Hearts in Harmony (2018), Commemoration Plaques at Seattle’s Historical Liberty Bank Building Apartments (2019), screenplay Troubled Waters for The Mahogany Project and We Out Here (2020), and essay “Sojourner Truth Prevails” (2021) in the National African American Clergy Women’s collection, and contributor/editor to 2022 Anthology Black Writers Unmasked. Additional writings are in Raven Chronicles, Emerald Reflections, Fly to the Assemblies! Seattle and the Rise of the Resistance, Voices That Matter, Threads, WA Humanities Crosscurrents, Blackpast.org. Avocet-Nature Journal, and Southeast Emerald. Her 2021 and 2022 venues included Jacob Lawrence exhibit at Seattle Art Museum, The Green Book at the Tacoma WA Historical Museum, African Proverbs at Highline Heritage Museum, NPR, Seattle Public Library. Monique Franklin (Verbal Oasis), is an activist, poet, performer, scientist, and mother from Rainier Valley, Seattle. She has been referred to as “The Unofficial Poet Laureate of South Seattle,” “The Billie Holiday of Spoken Word,” “The Verbal Manifestation of Nina Simone’s Soul”, “The High Priestess of Prose, Poetry and the Art of Storytelling" and the "The Soul Seamstress". Monique is a 15+ year member of African American Writers' Alliance and has self-published two volumes of poetry and has released three spoken word albums. Her poetry gives voice to social issues, human relationships, tributes to her many influences, and self-discovery. As a performer you can find her poetry commingling with musicians, vocalist and dancers. The subject matter of her poetry stems from the rich spectrum of her life experiences. Jacqueline (Jaye) Ware is a spoken word artist, poet, and playwright. She has performed at all major local museums, art galleries, fairs, festivals, Vashon & Camano Islands, senior centers, Town Hall, and many other venues. She has also produced events for PSARA, the African American Museum, and other organizations. Her two short plays Madison Park Bench and Covid Dreams were produced in 2020/21 by Mahogany Project and 18th & Union.

Kibibi Monié is a native of Seattle and the Executive & Artistic Director of Nu Black Arts West Theatre, the oldest African American Theater Company in Washington State. Ms. Monié is the first African-American to be President of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists Seattle local. The accomplished actor, singer, and director is a graduate of Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA with a BA in Communications, a Master's from Seattle University in the Executive Director Master Program, and a diploma in cinematography from The New York Film Academy. The playwright has written several one-act plays and is the only woman that directed the double Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson in a reading of his play The Homecoming performed at Seattle's ACT Theatre in 1997. Kibibi is a Nana (Queen as a charter member of the African-American Writers' Alliance (AAWA), Mother) in Ghana, West Africa.

Georgia Stewart McDade began reading her stories in public in 1991. She credits AAWA with making her write poetry. For a number of years, she has written poems inspired by artists at such sites as Gallery 110, Seattle Art Museum, Columbia City Gallery, and Onyx Fine Arts Collective. She contributes essays and poetry to South Seattle Emerald and opinion pieces to Leschi News. With Jim Cantú, she co-hosts Hearts and Soul for community radio station KVRU (105.7) She hopes soon to publish the journals she kept on her six-month, solo trip around the world.
