We are pleased to invite you to the opening of Ans Westra: Kerikeri 2025, the first exhibition of the late Dutch-New Zealander’s photographic work to be presented in Kerikeri. In partnership with {Suite}, the official agent for the Ans Westra Estate, this exhibition showcases 25 photographs taken in Te Tai Tokerau, alongside a selection of Westra's other renowned works.Ans Westra (1936–2023), born in Leiden, the Netherlands, was a highly regarded documentary photographer whose contributions have left an indelible mark on New Zealand’s photographic landscape. Using a medium-format, waist-level viewfinder camera for much of her career, Westra's images, which she began capturing in the 1950s, document the people, culture, and landscape of Aotearoa, with a particular focus on te ao Māori.
From the 1960s onwards, Westra spent extensive time traveling across New Zealand, working primarily for the Department of Education and Te Ao Hou, a magazine published by the Māori Affairs Department. Her work is widely regarded as a visual record of the nation, capturing moments of everyday life with remarkable candor and depth.
The exhibition opens on Monday, 5 May, from 5 pm to 7 pm, and will be on display throughout the month of May.
