The Friends of the Villa Louis Annual Meeting & Dinner will be held Thursday, March 20, at Huckleberry's Restaurant in Prairie du Chien. The evening will start at 5:30 p.m. with a social hour/cash bar, dinner will be served at 6 p.m. followed by a short meeting.From 7-8 p.m. there will be a presentation by Joshua Wichita on "Hercules Dousman, the American Fur Company, and the Business of U.S.-Indigenous Treaties" This presentation will examine how treaties became central to the business of the American Fur Company on the Upper Mississippi River, and the consequences for both Indigenous people and American settlers.
Joshua Wachuta is a public historian specializing in histories of the 19th century American Midwest and settler colonialism. He is currently a Mellon Humanities Fellow working in partnership with Effigy Mounds National Monument on a project to research the historic 1825, 1829, and 1830 Treaties of Prairie du Chien. Wachuta previously worked at Villa Louis as a historic interpreter from 2006-2013 and as a site manager from 2017-2018. He earned a Ph.D. in Public History and American History at Loyola University Chicago in 2019.
Dinner will consist of baked chicken and Swiss steak, roasted red potatoes, California blend vegetables, side salad, rolls, coffee and dessert. Cost for the event is $30 for Friends Members and $35 for non-members
Additionally, we will have two open board positions and will be holding an election to fill those spots. If you, or someone you know would like to become a board member, please notify us by March 17.
