It is with great excitement that we invite you to the Annual Human Rights Gala of the DC Commission on Human Rights on December 6, 2022.
About this Event

The Commission will be awarding its Cornelius R. ‘Neil’ Alexander Humanitarian Award, designed to honor the recipient’s life-time contributions to the protection of many of the 23 traits protected under the DC Human Rights Act; the Emerging Leadership Award, reserved for young people under the age of 30 whose work touches one or more of the protected traits; and, for the first time ever, we will be awarding our Community Award to an organization that has emerged as a leader towards the protection and promotion of one or more the protected traits or other human right issues.

The Gala usually occurs close to the International Human Rights Day, December 10, a day that commemorates the adoption of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This year, the Commission is also celebrating the 45th Anniversary of the creation of the DC Human Rights Act of 1977.

This year’s Gala theme is Celebrating Exceptional Leadership at the Crossroads of Gender and Human Rights. It is a way for the Commission to acknowledge and celebrate the work of those who dedicate themselves to gender equality. As gender is a spectrum, this theme also allows us to bring to light the similarities and need for solidarity between the women’s and trans rights movement. Issues such as gender-based violence, bodily autonomy, sexual and reproductive rights, representation, employment, and mental health not only apply to both groups, but the intersectionality of the struggle to overcome them by working together through education, outreach, and advocacy has never been more important.

The Human Rights Gala will be an in-person event with refreshments.
