This yearly event, led by Newcastle’s Danish community, marks Danish Liberation Day and celebrates the enduring connection between Denmark and Newcastle.During the Second World War, Newcastle was a second home for stranded members of the Danish Merchant Navy, who bravely sailed under the British flag in support of the Allied Cause. Our Danish Memorial and accompanying window stand as tributes to these selfless men.
On our website, watch a recent video by Danish vlogger Kristoffer Føns (Destination Well Known) explaining Newcastle’s ties to Denmark: newcastlecathedral.org.uk/event/danish-memorial-service/
