ON THE MOVE AND OUT OF SIGHT: Strengthening the data landscape to uphold the rights of migrant and displaced children
At the end of 2023, there were 47 million forcibly displaced children around the globe. These children are among the world’s most marginalized populations, often denied their basic right to health care, nutritious food, clean water and proper sanitation, and an education. At the same time, data and evidence on children on the move remain troublingly limited, particularly among the most vulnerable subgroups. As a result, their numbers, locations and urgent needs are largely unknown. This is an increasingly critical child rights issue that must be addressed in order to ensure migrant and displaced children are not left behind.
Join the International Data Alliance for Children on the Move (IDAC) and the High Commission for Planning, Government of Morocco for ‘ON THE MOVE AND OUT OF SIGHT: Strengthening the data landscape to uphold the rights of migrant and displaced children’, a three-day event focused on improving the evidence base for migrant and displaced children. IDAC’s second annual conference will convene representatives from governments, international organizations, academics, civil society, youth and other concerned stakeholders working at the nexus of migration, displacement and child-specific data work to unpack the challenges involved in producing and analysing child-specific migration and displacement data and map a course of action to overcome these obstacles.
Objectives:
- Take stock of the current data landscape for children on the move
- Address the ongoing challenges and identify solutions in order to strengthen data systems
- Provide a platform for countries to exchange ideas and elicit expertise on data systems for children on the move
- Present, discuss and elicit feedback on the IDAC’s activities
- Promote the exchange of ideas, knowledge and innovative methodologies and peer-to-peer learning
Target outcomes:
- Further build data producers’ and users’ awareness and understanding of the current state of child-specific migration and displacement data and statistics, solidifying a shared commitment to stronger data systems and rights-based policymaking and programming for children on the move
- Improve familiarity with recent and emerging data methodologies, tools and solutions and their potential to address the data gaps on children on the move
- Identify the challenges and necessary next steps towards better data for children on the move, guided by the Global Pledge Towards Better Data
- Identify the technical support needs of countries and link them to available providers within the IDAC network
- Examine and enhance the availability of critical public goods (e.g., guidance materials, data tools and methodologies) that assist in and standardize child-specific data collection, analysis, sharing and use
- Continue to build peer-to-peer learning, networks, partnerships and exchange of ideas to improve the data landscape for migrant and displaced children
