About this Event
Come see the beauty of the world of bonsai!
Join us once again to view and learn about this ancient artform as we bring together member's trees for their spring showing.

NHG is proud to welcome back this yearly event that celebrates and values age in miniature. We invite you to view a beautiful and diverse selection of bonsai trees, carefully trained and grown by the society’s members. While you view the show, you can learn about this ancient technique, get your questions answered, and see trees of all ages and in various stages of their development. Attend the live repotting demos, and see how it’s all done. You can even cast your vote for our ‘Best in Show’ contest.

Drop by our classroom, and don’t miss this chance to see some truly beautiful plants elevated to art!

PLUS! Join us this year for live Trees-in-Training Repotting Demos Saturday 10:00-12:00 and 1:00-3:00, and Sunday 10:00-12:00.

Saturday, April 13th, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Subject: Negari Style Bonsai TrainingCallicarpa japonica (a.k.a. Japanese Beauty Berry)
Artist: Brian Myers (Past President)
Description:
Negari Style bonsai are trees with exposed (visible) roots. These negari style Calicarpa japonica were potted and set 3 years ago and are now ready to be exposed. This demo will explain the initial processes of propagation through setting them in training. Then Brian will open the training containers, expose the roots, and clean up 2-3 of these Japanese Beauty Berry.

Saturday, April 13th, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM
Subject: Initial Styling & Repotting of Cedrus atlantica (a.k.a. Atlas Cedar)
Artist: Brian Myers (Past President)
Description:
While there are hundreds of trees commonly called “Cedar”, Cedrus atlantica are one of only 5 true Cedar species in the world and are relatively rare in this part of the world.
This Atlas Cedar was received mid-summer last year from Seattle. Unfortunately it arrived in a cracked pot. Since it was too late for a repot, Brian slip-potted the tree at the time knowing he would need to do a proper repot this year. Brian will demonstrate initial styling of this beautiful and compelling true cedar and then repot it in a slightly larger training pot.

Sunday, April 14th, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Subject: Thread Grafting Ficus benjamina (a.k.a. Weeping Fig)
Artist: Brian Myers (Past President)
Description:
Thread grafting is an essential skill in advanced bonsai. Building on last year’s demonstration of root grafting Japanese Black pine, Brian will explain why thread grafting is so important to bonsai. Then he’ll demonstrate thread grafting technique using Ficus benjamina as the base and Ficus benjamina ‘Too Little’ as the scions.

NOTE: This event is held primarily in our Classroom. If the weather allows, the demos will be held on our Patio.

Founded in 1965, The strives to share this wonderful art form in an open and informal fashion and welcomes all who have an interest. The Society meets at NHG monthly, with lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on workshops geared to the novice as well as the experienced enthusiast. Join us the first Saturday of each month in our Classroom from 9am - 12pm.
