Guest speaker: Dr. Helen Gittos, Fellow and Tutor in Medieval History at Oxford University
About this Event
How did the men and women buried at Sutton Hoo acquire so much wealth?
Why were they buried with so many objects from the eastern Mediterranean?
The conventional view is that they probably acquired the gold from their Merovingian neighbours, and that the imported goods came as gifts or through trade. This lecture will explore some alternative explanations which open up a startlingly new view of Anglo-Saxon history.
Lecture will commence promptly at 11am - please arrive in good time for the start.
Please provide your membership number on the day (if applicable).
