Annemarie Nelson, a gifted jazz and pop vocalist, performs tunes from her debut album “If You Could See Me Now” at the Dish with some of Dunedin’s finest jazz musicians. Originally recorded in Melbourne in 2008 and arranged by pianist Mark Fitzgibbons, the album showcases Anne Marie’s sultry and breathy vocal style, which is explored through a variety of jazz standards from the Great American Songbook. Influenced by singers such as Diana Krall, Dianne Reeves, Betty Carter, listeners can hear Anne Marie developing her own style on this album and she has hand picked a band of local musicians to realise it on the stage for the first time since being released digitally in 2022.
Anne Marie began her vocal career in Dunedin, performing with well known groups such as the Oxo Cubans, but went to study jazz performance in Christchurch and ended up with an eight year residency at the Blue Note in that city. The album was recorded during her time in Melbourne, but she also had a stint in London and on cruise-ships in the Mediterranean. Nelson sings in a variety of styles, including straight ahead swing, ballads and Latin numbers. Repertoire includes a laid back Latin version of the Horace Silver tune “Song for my Father”, the moody ballad “If You Could See Me Now”, the tango “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” and straight ahead numbers such as “Tight” and “Devil May Care”.
Nelson has assembled an all-star band for the gig, including club director Bill Martin, who will perform piano on most of the tunes and tenor saxophones on those numbers where Anne-Marie will accompany herself on keys! American trumpeter Mike Gaches will add another solo voice to the mix, a player who has featured at the Dish and Hanover Hall in recent times. Making his Dunedin Jazz Club debut will be double bassist Simon Eastwood, who is currently the Mozart Fellow at the University of Otago and a highly capable jazz musician from the Wellington scene. Holding it all together will be the ever reliable Carl Woodward, who will have the challenge of recreating some of those interesting grooves from Anne-Marie’s recorded album.
Personnel:
Anne Marie Nelson (vocals, keys)
Bill Martin (piano, tenor saxophone)
Mike Gaches (trumpet)
Simon Eastwood (double bass)
