A Musical Tale of Love and Tudor Tragedy
Written and Composed by Bob Whitley Performed by Bob Whitley and Lee MacKenzie
A musical tale of love and Tudor tragedy. Bob Whitley (guitars and mandola) and Lee MacKenzie ( baroque cello) take us back to the 16th Century and the story of the triumph and tragedy of Anne Boleyn.
Anne Boleyn holds King Henry VIII in thrall for six years and supplants Katherine of Aragon as Queen of England on the promise that she will bear King Henry a son and royal heir.
In a Tudor court of scheming courtiers, religious fervour and feuding families all are fighting for the King’s favour in a deadly battle of destinies and dynasties?
Running time: 90 mins + interval
Doors open 7pm. Cash bar with wine and soft drinks.
This is a fringe event for the Cerne Giant Festival, whose objectives are to provide events to enable people to better understand the history, landscape, and natural history of the Cerne Valley. Any profit from its events are used to support the historic churches in the Benefice of which Cerne Abbas is part.
It is timed to coincide with the second season of the University of Sheffield's 'Search for the Lost Abbey 2024', which is excavating parts of the Benedictine Abbey of Cerne Abbas.
This recording of 'Queens of England' was made recently at Athelhampton House, near Dorchester, Dorset.
Bob Whitley is a Poole-based songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and composer who has been delighting audiences across the Dorset folk scene for over 30 years. Bob and Lee continue in the 16th Century following on from their successful production ‘Magellan Circumnavigation’.
Wimborne St Giles 'Anne Boleyn - Wolf at the Door'
From the moment that Bob Whitley and Lee MacKanzie took to the stage in period costume, we all knew that we would be in for a treat. Through Music and narrative, they related the dramatic story of the triumph and tragedy of Anne Boleyn.
For a brief moment in time, we were transported back into the Court of King Henry VIII. The performance was breath-taking in its historical accuracy and drama. You could have heard a pin drop.
We were bowled over by the supreme musicianship of Bob and Lee, their glorious singing, and perfect harmonies. A momentous evening. An unforgettable experience.
Anne Boleyn paid the ultimate sacrifice for loving the King of England. We all shed a tear or two at the end. It was an evening not to be missed.
