Sacred Space Queer Songwriter Showcase: Featuring Anna Ballew and Lindsay White
About this Event

You're invited to an evening featuring two queer songwriters playing a bunch of original music in one gorgeous church. Join us at Normal Heights United (an LGBTQ safe and affirming space) to hear sets from:

  • (funk, blues, jazz-inspired...often compared to Rachel Price of Lake Street Dive)
  • (folk, indie - inspired...often compared to crying after therapy)

Please reserve your seat for free. Hosts suggest a $10 (or more!) day-of donation (Venmo or cash) that will directly support the artists.

Accessibility: Please email accommodation requests to [email protected] by October 7, and I will do my dang best to make sure the event is accessible for all attendees!

ANNA BALLEW BIO: Anna Ballew grew up in a music-filled household— her father provided plenty of musical entertainment, whether that was a family jam session to Cat Stevens’ “Moonshadow” or playing some tunes on guitar after dinner parties. Anna’s formal entrance into music started with classical violin at age 4. After a brief stint of choir in 5th grade, she returned to violin, but this time playing bluegrass style-fiddle. This is where she truly fell in love with music— the free-form and playful nature of bluegrass music, compared to her more structured by-the-book experience with classical violin, inspired her to get back into singing and start learning guitar in high school. Largely self-taught on guitar, Anna started learning songs that she heard her father play growing up, mainly from folk singer-songwriters like Jackson Browne and James Taylor. Towards the end of high school, she began her musical career performing with a friend at small events around her hometown of Missoula, Montana. During her years in college, her musical taste shifted more towards jazz and funk. She began to model her sound around artists like Amy Winehouse, Ella Fitzgerald, Allen Stone and Hiatus Kiayote. Often compared to Rachel Price of Lake Street Dive, Anna’s voice is rich, sultry and soulful. She brings a fresh, groovy vibe to classic standards, pop covers and modern R&B hits. She is currently working on an EP to be released in the next year. Anna can be found performing local restaurants, wineries, weddings and private events.

LINDSAY WHITE BIO: You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll call your therapist. With influences ranging from Bob Dylan to Ani DiFranco, Lindsay White's songwriting has earned recognition from the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Kerrville Folk Festival, and American Songwriter Magazine. Her latest LP Lights Out debuted #2 on the iTunes Singer-Songwriter charts, was named #1 Album of the Year by Global Texan Chronicles, and earned her an SDMA for Best Singer-Songwriter. Subsequent singles have charted on iTunes and earned additional San Diego Music Award nominations, including a 2022 win for Best Folk/Acoustic Song. White was named one of "15 Lesbian/Bi/Queer Musical Artists You Need to Know" by AfterEllen.com. She has opened for notable acts such as The Lone Bellow, David Crosby, Steve Poltz, Susanna Hoffs (The Bangles), Raining Jane ft. Jason Mraz, and more.
