About this Event
This series of three talks by Dr. June Neilson, exploring the vibrant history and culture of Anglo-Saxon Northumbria, will take place on Mondays 10-12. Course content will include origins, history, organisation and culture.
Mon 18 Nov: The first lecture will examine the origins and history of Anglo-Saxon Northumbria from the end of the Roman era up to the tenth century. This will encompass continuity from the Roman period and the early Anglo-Saxon era. The gradual formation of Northumbria from the amalgamation of the early kingdoms of Deira and Bernicia will be considered, leading onto the Viking invasions and settlements followed by the decline of the kingdom and its eventual incorporation into the kingdoms of Scotland and England.
Mon 25 Nov: Attention will be given in the second lecture to the organisation of Northumbria under its kings, the growth of important civil and religious settlements such as Bamburgh, Yeavering, Lindisfarne, Monkwearmouth-Jarrow, and the significance of place-names.
Mon 2 Dec: The third lecture will cover the important influence of contemporary Christianity and the rich culture including illuminated manuscripts, jewellery, metalwork and sculpture.
Tea and coffee will be served, and all are welcome. There is no need to print out and bring your ticket, as we will have a record of your booking.
