About this Event

Rememory and AIGA NY invite you to pause, take a breath and use your hands. An introduction to zine making using recycled materials, basic collages, and design principles hosted by Angela Pilgrim.

In this 2-hour workshop, you'll learn practical techniques for creating zines using transfers and collage with recycled materials. This session focuses on accessible printmaking methods that don't require a press.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Xerox Transfer Techniques: Understand how to transfer printed images from copy paper onto various surfaces using simple tools and technique.
  • Collage with Recycled Materials: Explore how to incorporate found and recycled materials into your zine, adding texture and interest to your pages.
  • Zine-Making Process: Combine your transfers and collage elements into a cohesive zine format, producing a personalized booklet of your work.
  • Layering and Composition: Learn effective methods for layering and arranging elements to create a visually strong and cohesive zine.
  • Consistent Results: Gain tips for achieving clean transfers and assembling the zine efficiently within the 2-hour session
    Workshop Structure:
  • Demonstration: The workshop begins with a focused demonstration of the techniques to provide you with a clear understanding of the process.
  • Hands-On Creation: Most of the class time will be dedicated to creating your zine, applying the techniques learned during the demonstration.
  • Completion: By the end of the session, you’ll have a completed zine showcasing your transfers and collages.
    What you should bring:

Personal Images or Designs:

  • Specific images, patterns, or designs to use for the transfers (About 5-10 images); Bring printed copies on copy paper. (High contrast images can only be printed by a Laserjet printer.)

Recycled Materials:

  • Unique recycled items you'd like to include in your collage

Additional Items to Bring:

  • Your favorite coloring supplies (pencils, markers)
  • Your favorite X-Acto knife and/or scissors. We will have some of these items on hand, but we encourage you to bring your own
  • Clothing: Comfortable attire and don't mind getting a bit messy.
  • Facemask: Glue used is strong smelling.

Facilitator
Angela Pilgrim
Angela is a is a multidisciplinary printmaker and visual artist. Her art has been featured in publications such as Pressing Matters, The Creative Independent and The Getty Archives. Her contributions to the art world extend beyond print, as she has also been actively engaged in guest residencies and lectures across the nation. Her work is held in both public and private collections both nationally and internationally, including the Newark Public Library, Petrucci Family Foundation Collection of African American Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Pilgrim's participation in group exhibitions is noteworthy, particularly her inclusion in Black Histories, Black Futures at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Printmakers North American Print Biennial and Gadsden Museum of Art. Additionally, she serves as a board member of Frontline Arts in Branchburg, New Jersey. Her contributions to the artistic community have been

recognized through numerous grants and awards, including the Newark Artist Accelerator Grant in 2020, Peters Valley School of Craft on behalf of The New Jersey Arts and Culture Renewal Fund of the Princeton Area Community Foundation, Newark Arts Community Grant (NACG) and the 2023 Creative Catalyst Grant from Newark Arts. Angela Pilgrim currently resides and works in New Jersey.
