My new photography series, Revelations & Reincarnations, is opening at Franklin FOTO on Saturday, October 4th and I hope to see you there. Come for the art, stay for the lovely people that are always at Franklin FOTO. 5-8pm that night, and for once I promise not to be late. 😍Revelations & Reincarnations
This series addresses the simultaneously personal yet deeply universal experience of living in an imperfect body. This world quite wrongfully demands that perfection be limited to the young and privileged, and so through these photographs, I ponder the explorations of life and its glorious complexities that is afforded someone who made it past the “youthful” years and am decidedly enjoying an era of revelations and reincarnations. My wrinkles, scars, aches + pains, plus sized clothing, and my glorious white hair are each passages in the book of my life written into the layers of my skin for all to see.
Each of these photographs are made by hand either in my basement darkroom or at Franklin FOTO using a variety of alternative processes as well as silver gelatin. Like all humans, each print is beautifully unique and one of a kind. Through the use of additional artistic mediums such as embroidery, paper collage, cardboard sculpture, paint, etc., you will see that many of these photographs are not simply photographic prints. Even though a photograph is indeed worth a thousand words, sometimes I have even more to say.
Bio-
Angel O’Brien is an artist, a poet, and an experimental photographer based in Portland, Oregon. Her inspiration is the palimpsest of life, pulling in fragments of place and moment to simultaneously divulge and obscure. It is about recognizing how a moment or place intertwines with the person to create a moment in time, and then turning these into a visual memory. Using historical photographic processes (gum-bichromate, salt printing, cyanotype, etc.) printing methods bringing to life the surrealist montages that she's known for creating. Angel’s prints are all one of a kind pieces lovingly made by hand in her basement darkroom. Her studio in NW Portland is a loving curated chaos filled with a myriad things which have been collected over many years, each thing awaiting its turn to be pulled from a box or off a shelf to begin its new life as part of a work of art, set to go into the world. Angel recently converted part of her studio into an art gallery [things/found] Atelier & Gallery that is open to the public three days a week featuring work by the local artists she has up at the moment.
