A collaboration by 5* reviewed tour guide Emma Fox and award winning Marble Brewery.Join Emma to explore what was one of the country's worst slums, with an unimaginable population density, crime, vice, fighting, filth, squalor, neglected children, destitute men and women, all lying next to an overcrowded paupers graveyard.
Described by Friedrich Engels as 'Hell on Earth' and by journalist Angus Reach in 1849 as "the lowest, most filthy, most unhealthy and most wicked locality in Manchester is called, singularly enough, 'Angel-meadow.' It is full of cellars and inhabited by prostitutes, their bullies, thieves, cadgers, vagrants, tramps and, in the very worst sties of filth and darkness, by those unhappy wretches the 'low Irish.'
Today it is a beautiful green oasis on the edge of the city centre, with an active ‘Friends’ group, new residential towers and one of Manchester’s best Victorian pubs, the Marble Arch. Here we will enjoy a delicious traditional Sunday roast.
