About this Event

Guitarist Andy Reiss brings a fabulous quintet with some of Nashville's top jazz musicians featuring Joel Frahm on saxophone, Andrew Carney on trumpet, with Rodger Spencer on bass and Danny Coots on drums.
Grammy awarded guitarist Andy Reiss is a member of the Time Jumpers and a prolific recording session musician in Nashville (Slim Pickens, the Jordanaires, Pete Wade, Charlie McCoy, Pig Robbins, Bob Moore, and Drake, Reba McEntire and Linda Davis). Andy has now been an active member of the Nashville community for more than 35 years. He left his hometown of San Francisco to pursue his passion for music as a career in 1980. He was brought up in a household listening to mainly traditional classical music (he even has an ancestor that was a German composer and guitarist in the 1700s!) He began his formal music education with the piano at age 7, moving to the guitar at 10. Being lucky enough to have grown up in in San Francisco during the 1960s, he would forever be influenced by the thriving music scene of the time. Some of the many concerts that were complete eye-opening experiences were B.B. King, Jimi Hendrix, and of course, pyschedelic luminaries such as The Grateful Dead and The Jefferson Airplane. This is also when he discovered jazz, and his guitar work became heavily influenced by greats such as Charlie Christian, Joe Pass, and Kenny Burrell.
After arriving in Nashville, he was fortunate enough to have two influential A-Team advocates, the legendary producer and steel guitarist Pete Drake, and the visionary Harold Bradley, the guitarist who, along with his brother Owen, built the first recording studio on Nashville’s Music Row, and served as a long time President of the local Musician’s Union. Andy’s first recording session was for the actor Slim Pickens, a session that was an overwhelming initiation, involving many A-Team pickers such as Drake, Charlie McCoy, Bob Moore, Pete Wade, Pig Robbins and the Jordanaires.
He has since become a studio mainstay, playing on hundreds of records, with artists including Miranda Lambert, John Oates, Amy Grant, Willie Nelson, Kenny Rogers and Leon Russell. Returning to his early jazz influences, he also has recorded with many jazz greats, including Pete Christlieb, Beegee Adair, Benny Golson, and as a member of “Bad Rhythm“, an exciting trio with drummer Danny Coots and pianist Brian Holland. He has also toured extensively with both the legendary Slim Whitman and Reba McEntire, and is a member of the Time Jumpers, a Western Swing Super Group on Rounder Records. The Time Jumpers have enjoyed a 20 year Monday night residency at various night clubs in Nashville, and have been nominated for six Grammy awards, winning one in 2017, for Roots Song of the Year. The band has also toured internationally, playing venues as diverse as Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa and Carnegie Hall.
For more than 30 years, Joel Frahm lived in New York City, working in jazz clubs, collaborating with other musicians, and honing his craft. He now lives in Nashville, where he continues to play the music he loves. His bold, inventive tenor sound has won fans in the U.S. and across the world. He has worked alongside Betty Carter, Kenny Barron, Freddy Cole, Dianne Schuur, Kurt Elling, Jane Monheit, Bill Charlap, Brad Mehldau, Matt Wilson, Cyrille Aimee, and many other top artists. He has played as a leader or sideman on more than 100 recordings and has appeared at jazz festivals in the United States, Europe, Israel, Canada and South America. In addition to his work as a performer, he has taught jazz classes in clinics at the University of North Carolina, the University of Connecticut, New York University, Wichita State University, the University of North Texas, Baylor University, Colorado State University, Furman University, the University of Toronto, the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, the University of Manitoba and others. He also has worked at the Monterey Jazz Festival’s Next Generation program; the Sant Andreu Youth Jazz Orchestra in Barcelona, Spain; the Dave Brubeck Institute in Stockton, California; the Center for Jazz Studies at the Israel Conservatory in Tel Aviv; the Czech Jazz Workshop in Prague; and the Siena Jazz Workshop in Italy. Joel grew up in Racine, Wisconsin and moved to West Hartford, Connecticut as a high school freshman, where he became part of the acclaimed Hall High School jazz band. It was there he developed a passion for jazz, exploring the music of jazz greats such as Art Blakey, Freddie Hubbard, Horace Silver and Wayne Shorter. In 1992, he received a bachelor's degree from the Manhattan School of Music.
Since the age of fifteen, Andrew Carney has been playing trumpet and flugelhorn professionally. He has had the honor of touring with artists such as Brian Setzer (currently) and Yve Evans, and has performed with Pink, Aretha Franklin, Andrea Bocelli, The Jacksons, Johnny Mathis, Ariana Grande, Michael Bolton, Dionne Warwick, Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Brenda Russell, Frankie Valle, Midnight Oil, Peter White, Paul Brown, the Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, and Randi Crawford.
Andrew has performed on the television shows American Idol, King of Queens, the Jimmy Kimmel Show, Conan O’Brien, and the Talk (performing with Andrea Bocelli) as well as motion pictures such as Anchorman 2, Starsky and Hutch, Why Do Fools Fall In Love and George Wallace (starring Angelina Jolie and Gary Sinise). He has performed in the El Centro Jazz Festival in Torino, Italy, The Long Beach Jazz, L.A. Classic Jazz, Orange County Art and Jazz, La Quinta Art & Jazz, and many other festivals throughout the country. He has also been invited to perform with the world famous Pacific Symphony at both the Verizon Amphitheater in Irvine, California as well as the Segerstrom Performing Arts Center in Irvine, California.
You may have unknowingly heard him playing in a television commercial for Google, Pechanga Casino, Nutra Systems, Los Angeles Times, A.M./P.M. Mini Markets, or perhaps even an episode or two of the Saturday morning cartoon, Spiderman. Composer, songwriter, arranger, educator, and performer, Andrew Carney covers a broad range of music styles. His debut CD entitled, "Home Again" is now accompanied by his latest release, "Playtime". Andrew is joined on this project by tenor saxophone great Justo Almario, drummer Land Richards, and bassist Alex Al, among many others.
