ANDVAKE is a Nynorsk word, of Norse origin. It can be translated as insomnia, but it alsoindicates a state of wake, characterized by extreme attention and vigilance.The music is composed to evoke such state in the musicians and therefore inthe audience, through continuous shifts in the musical landscape. Contrastarises from opposing determined and undetermined elements, texture andgesture, rarefied and dense, order and chaos.

Andvakeis a project born between late 2023 and early 2024, even if some ofthe music was written earlier and played with different combinations ofinstruments. In April 2024, the group got to its definitive lineup in consisting ofmyself, Stefano Boggiani on guitar, Øyvind Mathisen on trumpet, OskarLindberget on saxophones, Erlend Olderskog Albertsen on bass and MarkusKristiansen on drums.When I started writing the music for this band, my goal was to explore themany ways a composition can serve as a source for improvisation. In doingthis, I’m very much inspired by the American avant-garde jazz scene,especially by artists such as Tim Berne, Mary Halvorson and Henry Threadgill.Those musicians led me to experiment with atonal polyphonic writing andrhythmic counterpoint. I wanted to reach a certain level of complexity in theform while maintaining the spontaneity of the improvised parts, buildingarticulated tunes shaped as suites between fully written and freely improvisedparts.The result is a very energetic music, with frequent shifts in the sonic landscapewhere electroacousticity is also a distinctive element.

I spent years exploring the implementation of electronics in my playing, withEivind Aarset, Bill Frisell and Jakob Bro as main influences. This approach toguitar creates an interesting contrast with an otherwise fully acoustic band,which then at times get to sound like a version of the Ornette Coleman Quartetwith electric guitar.Andvakedraws inspiration from a very specific scene tied to the American jazztradition, infusing it with Nordic sensitivity and approach to improvisation.Therefore I believe it represents something new in the Scandinavian creative music scene.

Øyvind Mathisenis a Norwegian trumpeter, composer, and band leadereducated at NTNU in Trondheim (Bachelor) and the Norwegian Academy ofMusic in Oslo (Master). He has released three albums of his original jazz musicand have performed over 70 concerts with his own bands since 2018(ØyvindMathisen Trio, ØyvindLand, Get Your Goat). He is also part of OJKOS andCosmic Swing Orchestra.

Oskar Lindbergetis an active and versatile saxophone player and composerbased in Oslo. He is active on the folk, world and alternative rock scenes aswell as working with jazz and improvisation. Oskar has contributed to andcomposed for more than 20 studio albums and toured 4 different continentsthe last couple of years.

Erlend Albertsenis a bandleader, composer and multi-instrumentalist. He hasbeen part of several projects within jazz, contemporary and Indian traditionalmusic (Erlend Albertsen BassPace, Akmee, Sanskriti Shrestha Avatar, FredrikRastens Six Moving Guitars, Øyvind Mathisen Trio) releasing almost a record ayear for the last decade while touring in Norway, Denmark, France, Iceland,Germany and Japan.

Markus Kristiansenis a Norwegian drummer, improviser and composereducated at the jazz and improvised music program at the Norwegian Academyof Music, where he studied with Thomas Strønen and Pål Thowsen. Since 2019he has played concerts in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Belgium with musicstyles ranging from jazz and free improvisation to folk pop.

I,Stefano Boggiani, am a guitar player, composer and improviser. I movedfrom Italy to Oslo to take part in a Master studies in Improvised Music and Jazzat Norges Musikkøgskole, where my guitar teacher was Lage Lund.I am orhave been part of different projects that span over jazz, comtemporary musicand other forms of art (Frihetens Former live at Munch Museum; musicalaccompaniments to the screening of silent movies, with Øyvind Mathisen andAndreas Røysum). Recording and performing regularly both in Italy and inNorway, I released my first album as a leader in July 2023, with an Italianquartet calledNiu Mos, and I will soon release new music with one of myNorwegian bands as well (Andvake, tryAngles).
