Maybe you have heard of the Great Pyramid in Giza, Stonehenge, or the Great Wall of China. Perhaps you’ve glanced at a picture of Chichen Itza or the Taj Mahal. These are World Heritage Sites; sites that are significant culturally, historically, or scientifically. There about 1200 World Heritage Sites throughout the World and only 26 in the United States. There is no doubt these are special places, but what does it truly take to achieve World Heritage Status?
Join us at 4:30pm on April 18th at the Octagon Earthworks Visitor Center to learn about UNESCO and the World Heritage Program. We'll unpack what it means for a site to have Outstanding Universal Value, and we'll explore how Outstanding Universal Value is illustrated by the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks. We will hear from Logan York, a citizen of the Miami Tribe, about what the World Heritage status of the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks means for the Descendants of the precontact American Indian peoples who built the Earthworks. Finally, come and learn how your community can benefit from a World Heritage site in your “backyard” and how you can be a part of helping the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks flourish!
In a TEDx style presentation, our experts will have 8-10 minutes to discuss these topics. This will be a quick moving talk but there will be plenty of time to engage with the experts after the talk to learn more!
We hope you will come join us for this special event and brush up on your knowledge of the importance of World Heritage and what an honor it is to have one of these many incredible sites in Ohio!
This is a FREE event and no preregistration is required.
