During Harriet Tubman theTubman's era of slavery, enslaved people often used braids as a discreet way to communicate messages with each other, with different braid patterns representing coded information like escape routes, safe houses, or other important details, essentially acting as secret "map" hidden in their hair; this practice was particularly prevalent with cornrows.
