About this Event

Jesus & Radical Lutheranism

Jesus Christ preached a radical Gospel--the forgiveness of sins, eternal life, and salvation-granted through His gift of faith alone. Paul preached this radical Gospel of Justification by faith alone in Christ alone. Luther 'rediscovered' this Gospel, but rightly predicted that it would be lost again fater he died. By 1580, only a remnant, the so-called Second Antinomians, continued to believe, teach, and confess this radical Gospel.

This year, we are examining a work of Finnish scholar Laurie Haikola, "Usus Legis," which was a critical contribution to the rediscovery of Luther and Christ's radical Gospel of the forgiveness of sins in late twentieth-century North American Lutheranism.

The phrase "Radical Lutheranism" was coined in an article3 by the late Gerhard Forde to describe this theology--the theology of Martin Luther and the so-called Second Antinomians. IUt surived in parts of Europe and the Nordic countries, and boldly re-emerged in the mid-twentieth century particularly in the American Lutheran Church of 1960.
