The Trojan War was a conflict over the city of Wilusa (aka Troy), in Western Anatolia (northwestern Turkey) between the Hittites and Ahhiyawa peoples, known today as Mycenaean Greeks, described in Greek mythology.
For some time scholars debated if the epic Trojan War of Homer's Iliad had indeed occurred.
Recovered Hittite tablet, the "Tawagalawa Letter," describes hostilities over Wilusa around 1200 BC, and contain the passage "The King of Hatti has persuaded me about the matter of the land of Wilusa concerning which he and I were hostile to one another, and we have made peace.”
The account in Homer's Iliad describes a decade long war, with over 1000 ships launching from Greece, and Troy defending itself with help of the Lydians and Phrygians. The plot concerns the beautiful Helen, wife of King Menelaus of Sparta, who was kidnapped by Trojan prince Paris, whereupon the Greeks set out to recover her by force. Woven into the story are the famous Trojan Horse and Achilles' heel in a tale of unrestrained anger, grief, loyalty, politics, greed, glory vengeance, honor and perseverance.
So does the evidence confirm The Iliad's epic account of a 10 year brutal war that ended with Troy burning to the ground?
