The history of the Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta is full of dramatic and colourful incidents, but one of the least known is that the Order came very close to not only to founding a new Malta in the Indian Ocean in alliance with the Ethiopian Empire, but also playing a leading role in the global coffee trade. Furthermore, that it may have had a direct influence upon the Royal Navy’s 19th century campaign against slavery.
