About this Event
The Revolt in the Netherlands was a complex and long-running conflict that eventually resulted in the creation of a new state in the northern Netherlands: the Dutch Republic while the southern provinces remained in Habsburg hands.
Tensions erupted in the summer of 1566 when iconoclastic violence swept the country and the stern Habsburg reaction, led by the Duke of Alba, sowed further opposition. When in 1572 a significant number of towns and cities rejected Habsburg rule, the conflict morphed into full-scale conventional warfare.
These revolts played a key role in the national stories of the modern Netherlands, Belgium, and Spain.
This has made it the subject of powerful narratives, stories of heroism, and ‘black legends" with Dutch and Belgian historians adding increasing layers of nuance and complexity in order to dispel such myths.
Was indeed the Belgian and Dutch narrative on the Spanish rulling as teached in schools and univerisities ?
Was the Duke of Alba so bad as the Belgian and Dutch narratives told us ?
Was the spanish ruling in Belgium so bad as many believe it was ?
