From the 9 February to 30 March, the Alexander Heritage and Research Library Te Rerenga Mai o Te Kāuru will present “Thank you, Miss New Zealand”: The Jane Winstone Collection, based on the life of famous Whanganui aviatrix Jane Winstone.
As one of Whanganui’s wonder women, Jane Winstone is widely remembered for her extraordinary achievements in aviation. At just 17 years old, she became New Zealand’s youngest woman solo pilot in 1931. A foundation member of the Whanganui Aero Club, she flew in numerous air pageants and competitions and piloted the first flight from Whanganui Airport with instructor Ian Keith. She also had the distinction of being New Zealand’s first woman to fly a glider, and had the rare opportunity to fly the famed Southern Cross piloted by Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, as well as an aircraft belonging to celebrated trans-Tasman aviator Pat O’Hara. During the Second World War, she joined the Air Transport Auxiliary in 1942, ferrying military aircraft to bases around England. In this role she flew an extraordinary range of aircraft, including the now-iconic Hurricane and Spitfire fighters. Tragically, Jane’s life was cut short at the age of 31 when her Spitfire suffered an engine failure on take-off, crashing into the English countryside.
While many are familiar with her aviation milestones and the tale of her untimely death, this exhibition looks at the lady behind the legend. Through never-before-seen letters, diaries, and family photographs, visitors gain an intimate insight into Jane’s life, personality and relationships. The young woman you’ll meet in this exhibition is so full of life – adventurous, charismatic, playful yet poised – a magnetic person, known for her warmth and charm.
The exhibition also explores Jane’s personal relationships, including her engagement to fellow Whanganui Aero Club member and bomber pilot Angus MacKenzie, who was killed during a raid over Essen in 1942, and her relationship with Australian doctor Vernon Howarth. Not for the emotionally faint of heart, Jane’s story is one of resilience, courage, and hope in the face of profound loss.
Aircraft enthusiasts of all ages will enjoy seeing models of the planes Jane flew (courtesy of Whanganui Aeromodellers Club) and interactive elements, including a video display showcasing the many aircraft Jane piloted and a hands-on paper aeroplane-making station.
A Collections Kōrero related to the exhibition will be held as part of La Fiesta on Sunday 15 February at 2pm. Guided tours of the exhibition will also take place on Wednesday 4 March at 10am and 2pm.
If you are interested in bringing a larger group through the exhibition, please contact us as guided tours are possible, but subject to staff availability.
Visitors are invited to discover the life and legacy of this extraordinary Whanganui woman.
