The Historical Society of Oak Park and River Forest will host its annual “Tale of the Tombstones” cemetery walk starting at noon Sunday, Oct. 20, at Forest Home Cemetery, 863 Desplaines Ave., Forest Park. This year’s walk focuses on the north half of the cemetery, with the theme “Kindred Spirits.” This section was opened in 1873 under the name Waldheim Cemetery and appealed to those interested in a non-sectarian burial ground. There are multiple fraternal, labor, and group burial sections in the area, including the grand monuments for the United Ancient Order of Druids and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
"Kindred Spirits" is a phrase that celebrates people who join together with others who have similar interests or attitudes.
On Oct. 20, our talented actors and knowledgeable guides will explain the origins of both the Odd Fellows and Druids fraternal groups in the United States. Other performers will tell the stories of a charismatic labor leader, an immigrant who became a record-setting U.S. Congressman, and a Chicago Bears superstar.
Tours start every 10 minutes between noon and 1:30 p.m. The tour lasts between 90 minutes and two hours. Purchase your tickets for a time slot in our online history store at oprfmuseum.org or by calling the museum at 708-848-6755.
This year’s lead sponsor is Conboy-Westchester Funeral Home.
