How does one study slavery in the ancient world when the evidence is limited? This talk will begin by highlighting some major trends and questions that have driven slavery studies in the 20th and 21st century. In general, historians have moved away from slavery as an issue of property and taxonomy, and instead pursued sociological questions (gender, race, identity(s), power, etc.). However, it is challenging to investigate these types of questions in the Ancient Near East given that the evidence is textual and often limited to legal documents. This talk will explore how a more robust legal theory of property might help historians of the Ancient Near East begin answering sociological questions. I especially welcome engagement and insight from other fields as I explore this approach.Register Here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/978316199087?aff=oddtdtcreator
