Arnold Schoenberg’s first major work, the string sextet Verklärte Nacht , is based on a poem by Richard Dehmel that describes a man and woman out walking on a cold night. The premiere on March 18, 1902 was met with some unfavorable reaction, perhaps attributable to anti-semitism. However, Schoenberg’s work impressed Mahler, who was in the audience that night.

In a collection of writings assembled by his friends and representing the closest thing we have to an autobiography, Jimi Hendrix listed Mahler as one of his influences and referenced having many Mahler recordings. He wrote about segregation and being persecuted, themes familiar to Mahler himself. He also wrote about wanting to pioneer a new sound. He told singer-songwriter Patti Smith he wanted to create a music unlike anything he’d written, or anyone had heard before.
With Hendrix’s affection for, and similarities to Mahler, and with our own artistic director possessing unique skill on the guitar, this concert feels like a natural fit. Come and hear what Hendrix might have sounded like if he ever played Mahler’s music. And experience the genius of Kenneth Woods in a way you have never seen it before.
