Derwent Inktense is a fantastic medium for creating artwork both indoors and outdoors. Bright and vibrant, Derwent Inktense pencils are similar to watercolour pencils, except they dry permanent like ink. This allows you to build layers in a way that is more akin to coloured pencil than to watercolour. In this 4-week course, Alex will show you how to use Derwent Inktense pencils with confidence. The course schedule (2-hour sessions) is as follows:
Week 1: Getting used to the pencils. Swatching and other exercises. In this class, you will learn how to use the pencils through wet and dry application, how to make swatching charts to get you accustomed to how the colours look, and which colours are best to buy for different applications.
Week 2: Painting tonal landscapes from photos. In this class, you will learn to do "thumbnail" landscapes based on tonal variation, filling a page with different one-colour, two-colour, and three-colour landscapes. For the brave, we will then progress to any-colour landscapes!
Week 3: Painting plants and autumn leaves. In this class, you will learn how to use Derwent Inktense in a more subtle way: for botanical illustrations. We will draw wild plants and autumn leaves found locally, using fineliner outlines to create the drawing then using the Inktense in layers to build colour into the drawings.
Week 4: Painting birds. In this class, you will use all you've learnt about Derwent Inktense to create a beautiful bird painting using photos Alex has taken of birds in and around East Devon. You will trace an outline drawn by Alex then add your own details. You will learn how to mix realistic colours based on the skills you have developed with pencils over the last few weeks.
This course is held at The Nature Journaling Centre, Umborne Bridge Studio, Unit 1 Dolphin Street, Colyton, Devon EX24 6LU. The course price is £95 including all materials (paper to keep, Inktense pencils to be used within the session only.)
