Join the Coffee House on Wednesday, February 21st for a lively and fascinating talk on "Our Gilded Age" with Franklin Hill Perrell, Chief Curator of the Nassau County Museum of Art. As always, the conversation and conviviality will continue over dinner downstairs after the program.
Franklin Hill Perrell is best known as curator of over 50 museum exhibitions ranging from Warhol silkscreens to Picasso ceramics, and for the likes of Geoffrey Holder, Iris Apfel, and Helen Frankenthaler. His own Pop inspired paintings were shown at Frank Caro Gallery on 57th Street and in 2023 at East End Arts.
In his career as Chief Curator of the , some of his most important exhibitions included: Calder & Miro; Fernand Leger; Picasso Ceramics; Stanford White and Louis Comfort Tiffany; American Realism Between the Wars, Reginald Marsh and Infamous New York; Photorealism; Op and Pop: and Art and Fashion. Franklin Hill Perrell’s present project is curating Nassau County Museum of Art’s current exhibition, on display through March 2024, entitled Our Gilded Age.
Like the nation’s economy, American art and literature flourished during the Gilded Age. It was an exuberant age of excess with its own secret flaws, including widespread fraud. Our Gilded Age examines the appearances and the realities of an era that mirrors our own in many ways. The art of John Singer Sargent, Childe Hassam, Louis Comfort Tiffany and others adorned palatial residences designed by Stanford White and Ogden Codman Jr., architect of our own quintessential Gilded Age mansion. Drawing heavily upon the local literary history of Long Island, including William Cullen Bryant, Mark Twain (who named the Gilded Age), Walt Whitman, Edith Wharton and others, the exhibition includes paintings, fashion, decorative arts including period silver and china, photographs, manuscripts, first editions and other historic memorabilia.
