"Notions of Materiality" Cranbrook Academy of Art Fiber Class of 2024 Exhibition
"Notions of Materiality" examines the collective sourcing of symbolic materials and fiber processes. Works presented serve as tangible, tactile reflections on the last two years of discussion, critique, and collaboration within the Fiber department at Cranbrook Academy of Art.
Constructed from thrifted fabrics, sourced fibers, paper pulp, beads, and metal, these works highlight legacy, identity, transition, and remembrance. Materials allow for a rewriting and reclamation of history, while simultaneously honoring and preserving familial legacy.
Transitive moments are constructed through stitching and sculpting. Process bridges past, present, and future, recalling the Spanish verb conjugation, imperfecto progresivo — actions existing continuously in the past. Tensions of multifaceted identities are considered through use of cotton, silk, bamboo, wool, copper, and steel. Quilting, weaving, and felting recount stories of origin, existence, and becoming.
