On Thursday, October 30, we welcome Shravya Kag (current Woodstock AIR) to “Meet the Artist” night at CPW. Kag will be presenting her ongoing body of work ‘వెళ్ళొస్తా (vellostha) which explores her evolving gender-identity and also gender norms in India. Vellostha’, in her native tongue Telugu, literally translates to ‘I will go and come back’. With this phrase, when you say goodbye you instantaneously promise a return. In returning to her hometown in India, she is saying ‘Vellostha’ to her current queer, gender non-conforming self, revisiting a nostalgic traditionally gendered self and repeating the process in reverse as she comes home to Brooklyn. This photographic project is a synthesis of this iterative journey. Kag uses photography, collage and text to create a space for reflection and compassion for the process. This event will be live-streamed on CPW's YouTube page at 6pm.
Join us every Thursday evening at CPW, when we host illuminating talks with local and visiting artists. “Meet the Artist” allows the public to get to know new work, to hear about artistic processes, and to meet friends and other local artists. The evening takes place at CPW’s gallery at 25 Dederick Street in Kingston, NY. It is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks are served.
“Meet the Artist” is made possible by a generous grant from the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation.
Shravya Kag (she/they) is a photographer and director with a focus on queer and South Asian stories around themes of identity, community and solidarity. Her practice is observational and archival stemming from the belief that queer existence in itself is legacy. Moving away from the standard narratives of queer trauma and resilience, Kag’s work focuses on joy and daily life. Her process is collaborative, often involving the participant in every step of documentation. She immerses herself in communities, hanging out with the participants, often without a camera and invites conversation and interpretation. Kag’s work has been exhibited at various locations such as Somerset House, London, Photoville and Art Space NYC. She holds her Masters in Photography from the School of Visual Arts.
She is currently working on her first photo book, ‘ వెళ్ళొస్తా (vellostha)’, and her firs
