About this Event

On Thursday, June 20, we welcome Alon Koppel to “Meet the Artist” night at CPW. Koppel will present an arc of his life experience through studying photography in Israel in the 90’s, nearly abandoning it while running a design business in NYC for over twenty years, and how his career change back to working as a commercial photographer has reignited his passion to create long-term personal projects, invest in his own ideas and give himself time to explore and enjoy photography once again. He will present photographs and documents from a variety of projects and encourages a dialog with the audience. This event will be live-streamed on CPW’s YouTube Page at 6 pm.

Join us every Thursday evening at CPW, when we host illuminating talks with local and visiting artists. “Meet the Artist” allows the public to get to know new work, to hear about artistic processes, and to meet friends and other local artists. The evening takes place at CPW’s gallery at 474 Broadway in Kingston, NY. It is free and open to the public. Coffee, tea, and snacks are served. “Meet the Artist” is made possible by a generous grant from the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation.

Alon Koppel returned to photography, his main passion, focus of creativity and a source of income, following a career in design. Alon’s experience as a graphic designer enables him to bring a more rigorous methodology and project-based approach to photography than he previously could and, paradoxically with that, more freedom to explore. Alon’s work runs the gamut from a rephotography project of historical stereoscopic images to making long exposure photographs of various modes of transportation. His photography practice centers on key aspects of conceptual landscape photography, emphasizing location, time, and repetition. Grounded in the exploration of the sublime, the work documents the evolving landscape through meticulous depictions of man-made structures and vessels. It delves into the signs of industrialization, climate change, and the natural progression of seasons.Alon currently resides in Catskill, New York. His Shipping Lane project was selected for an exhibition at Klompching Gallery in New York City as part of FRESH 2023. Alon is currently an artist-in-residence with the Erie Canal, working on a long-term, rephotography documentation project.
