What is a Posada?

Posadas in México began during the colonial period, when the Spaniards used them as a way to “teach” (colonize) indigenous communities about Christmas. The word posada means inn or lodging, and traditionally the celebration reenacts the journey of Mary and Joseph in search of shelter.

Although many of the traditions that we know & love, like posadas, have a dark colonial origin, for many of us in the diaspora in the U.S. & in parts of México & Latin America, the meaning has evolved, its meaning has softened and expanded beyond its religious and colonial origins.

When I moved to México, posadas showed up in a different way. They became holiday gatherings with friends, food, dancing, piñatas, and a feeling of warmth and belonging. Less about ritual, more about togetherness. Less about religion, more about community.

This version of the posada is an offering rooted in that same spirit, a gathering for friends and chosen family in Los Angeles. A space to celebrate the holidays through joy, connection, and our shared traditions in the diaspora while enjoying childhood favorites like tamales, pozole y ponche con piquete.
