Esteemed Grieg and Norwegian studies expert, William Halverson, presents a talk on why translators of poetry always have a guilty conscience.Dr. Halverson is completing the first English translation of Arne Garborg's "Haugtussa," one of the most significant Norwegian poetical works in the Nynorsk language. Anyone who's ever tried literary translation has faced the problem of accurately conveying meaning, mood, rhyme, and meter without getting too far from the original author's intent.
Follow along in Dr. Halverson's journey in trying to recreate the spirit and essence of the poems in this lively conversation.
