“In Our Dance Era” Dance Arts Academy’s annual Spring Concert will be presented May 23-25th at Milliken Auditorium, in the Dennos Museum Center. Our Upper Level Concerts, Friday, May 24th and Saturday, May 25th at 7:30 p.m., feature the Award-Winning Company Dance Traverse (our 1st, 2nd, Teen and Junior Companies) and our Award Winning Senior Fusion Company in ballet, pointe, jazz, contemporary, lyrical, tap, hip hop, and musical theater. Promising to be fast paced and full of variety, featured performances include our “Critic’s Choice” winning pieces, “Ode to Joy”, choreographed by NYC Guest Artist Suzi Taylor, “Oh Darlin”, choreographed by CDT Alum Maddy Falconer, and “Fly”, choreographed by Artistic Director Betsy Carr, as well as our Graduating Senior’s Piece, “Ready” choreographed by Los Angeles Professional Dancer (and DAA/CDT Faculty) Abigail Rogier. “Ready” was named the “Highest Scoring Age 13 & Up” Piece at the Headliners Sold Out Competition in Hartland.
Our CDT Senior Class of 2024 is an outstanding group of young artists who collectively have been offered more than 1 million dollars in College Scholarships, including a Full Ride Scholarships to the University of Virginia for Leighanna Smith, and Chapman University for Liberty Smith. Ella Fournier (Indiana University), Isabel Seymour (Notre Dame) and Mia Silveri (Michigan) have also earned many honors scholarships and offers from Elite Level Universities as well. Additional DAA Senior Fusion Graduates Riley Goetz (NMC), Alexis Ball (Calvin University on a Cross Country and Track Scholarship), and Lauren Godmer (NMC) were the Top three Novice Soloists at Headliners this Season. All of our graduating Seniors will perform their Solos in our Upper Level Performances on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 pm.
CDT had an incredible competitive season earning The “Outstanding Studio” (of 52 attending) as well as Critics Choice Honors for all 4 age divisions at NYCDA Lansing, as well as Top Placings for all of our Companies at Headliners in Howell, including “Prana”, choreographed by NYC Guest Artist Andy Pellick (Top Overall Senior Productions at Headliners), “Take On Me” choreographed by Los Angeles Guest Artist Nick Young (3rd Overall Senior Productions at Headliners), “Love Again” choreographed by Competition Director Tya Harrison (4th Overall Senior Productions), and “The Woods” choreographed by Senior Fusion Co. Director Maria Drost, (1st Overall all Novice Large Groups at Headliners).
Talented CDT Alumni have also contributed award winning choreography to our Spring Concert including, Maddy Falconer, recent Summa Cum Laude graduate of the prestigious USC Kaufman School of Dance and Director of Falco Dance Company, Ellie LaPointe, Pace University Commercial Dance Graduate and Dance Captain/Dancer for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, and Casey Sutherland, another Pace Graduate and currently dancing and teaching professionally in New York City.
DAA Faculty Laurie Murphy, Pam McCormick, Carley Klebba, Tera Garrow, Justin Koertgen, Judith Wonacott, Sahra Turner, Roxanne Blumerick, Maggie Sarmiento, Holly Garbasch, and Cortney Brown have also choreographed exciting pieces for “In Our Dance Era”. “All of these opportunities for our Dancers provide for a versatile and exciting Spring Concert. It’s a very fulfilling process for our Dancers,” said Co-Owner Sue Buck. “These dancers are dedicated, talented, positive and hard working, and that has contributed greatly to the wonderful year we’ve had. This concert will celebrate all of that inspiration,” said Carr.
The Children & Pre/Teen Concerts, featuring dancers ages 2 and up, are Thursday, May 23rd (5:30 & 7:30) & Friday May 24th at 5:30, and Saturday the 25th at 11:00, 1:00, 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. The Award Winning Company Dance Traverse will perform in all of our Children’s Shows. Both the Children’s and Upper Level Shows promise to be enjoyable and inspiring.
