For homeschooled tweens and teens. Pick from projects where art gets used in the real world like album covers, greeting cards, t-shirt design, character design, fandom art, animation art, children's book illustration, fashion illustration, magazine illustrations etc. Learn the basics of color theory using gouache paints and develop the ability to paint from both reference and observation while emphasizing “telling the story”. Brainstorming, research, thumbnails, and finding a design process throughout are emphasized. Learn to express your individual creativity, style, and imagination through individual projects. A quick survey of the history of illustration and discussion of ways to get your art out there rounds out the class. Basic sketching and painting experience is a plus, but it is not required.

INSTRUCTOR:
Charis holds a BFA in Illustration from ArtCenter College of Design near Los Angeles. There she studied entertainment design as well as multiple forms of illustration and design. The summer after graduating, she interned at Film Roman, the animation company that makes the show The Simpsons. She has created storyboards for indie film projects as well as displayed her art in many major US cities. Teaching became her primary focus when she moved to Hawaii with her husband (stationed there with the Navy) and taught various art classes on multiple bases as well as in a hotel on Waikiki beach. She spent almost a decade on Oahu, so freediving and island life always inspires her personal paintings. She and her family moved to Utah in 2020 when they said goodbye to military life and now happily reside in Syracuse. She teaches both realistic and stylized drawing and painting in acrylics, gouache, and oils.
