Play powerful, dynamic, high-status characters and learn how to support them in this workshop focused on character, status and supportive play in theatrical improvisation.
The purpose of this workshop is to give performers a series of exercises, tools and skills designed to unlock their most powerful and potent characters and release their most dynamic scene starts without fear of judgement, reprisal or danger. By liberating their creative potential, performers will be better able to self-reflect on their habitual choices and self-evaluate in a way that is creative and empowering rather than destructive and restrictive. This curriculum operates with absolute minimum negative feedback and maximum positive reinforcement to help improvisers rise to a level of confidence where they can play a character of any status and initiate any scene they wish without worrying about “making mistakes” or bracing for unanticipated reactions.
This workshop is designed to break the institutional programming that holds many performers back from playing the characters they want to play, exploring the ideas they wish to explore and having the fun and collaborative experience they have not been able to access in mainstream improv environments. When you leave the workshop, you’ll have a new set of tools, so maybe next time there isn’t the right “door” available to go through, you can cut a hole right through the drywall or build and entire new building, so to speak. Come on out and power up with us!

About the Instructor:
Lindsay Gonzales (She/Her/Hers) has been performing comedy, theatre and improv for most of her life. A stand-up comedienne, improviser and raconteuse, she is an alumna of the award-winning Family Show at ImprovBoston where she also co-produced and hosted weekly variety shows for many years. She is currently part of the creative team for MAD Improv English language comedy in Madrid, Spain and splits her time between Chicago, Madrid and touring internationally to perform and teach.
Lindsay has run countless hours of jams, workshops, practices and rehearsals over the years, but her primary focus is on theatrical improv and changing the paradigm of what improvised theatre has become. Incorporation of dance, movement and visual storytelling is instrumental to elevating an improv show from people talking about doing things on stage to artists connecting on a human level with their audience. Over the past 20 years, Lindsay has taught workshops on using theatrical genres in short and long form improv, dance and movement, character creation, accent and voice, advanced improv edits, commedia dell'arte, musical improv and even an improv class for stand-up comedians on how to use improv techniques to workshop their written material.
She has performed at theatres and clubs all over Boston, Chicago, London and Madrid and has also performed comedy in over a dozen countries including England, Denmark, France and Spain. Lindsay has performed in festivals such as The Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Impro Mundial Chile, The Women In Comedy Festival, The Pittsburgh Comedy Festival, Madison Lady Laughs, Festim de Impro, The Chicago Improv Festival, Chicago Funny Women Fest, Geek Week, Semaine de l'Impro de Nancy and the Boston Improv Festival.
