About this Event
-PLEASE NOTE THE CONFERENCE WILL BE HELD IN SPANISH-
Diego de Pantoja (1571-1602), was a Spanih jesuit who gained the confidence of the Chinese imperial court and contributed with his books in Spanish and Mandarin to the beginning of East and West to know each other. Pantoja contributed to the spread of Christianity in China, earning the respect of the Chinese authorities after getting closer to the culture, customs and traditions of this people.
During the 21 years he spent in China, the Spanish Jesuit devoted himself to the study of the Chinese language, which he learned very quickly, and of the classical texts of that country.
He wrote, among others a treaty on Chinese geography, history, culture, and systems of government, wrote works in Mandarin which are currently preserved in the Peking Library and he drew up a world map (and Chinese atlas) for the emperor and wrote The World Outside China, which helped Chinese's cultural elite to look abroad.
He worked in Beijing for many years, including as a musician, astronomer (with calendar corrections) and as a geographer (working with latitude).
