"Daddy Long Legs" the musical is based on a beloved 1912 novel by Jean Webster. The story starts at the “John Grier Home,” an orphanage in New England at the turn-of-the-century, and tells the story of orphan Jerusha Abbott and the mysterious benefactor who agrees to send her to college. Under the conditions set by her benefactor, Jerusha must send him a letter once a month, describing her new experiences with life outside the orphanage, but he will not respond in any way. She decides to address him by the pet name "Daddy Long Legs" because she assumes he is old, rich, and tall. But calling him "Dear Old Man" or "Dear Rich Man" seems rude, so she latches onto his height, and he quickly becomes like an imaginary father to her.

Daddy Long Legs is an eccentric benefactor for his time. He believes Jerusha deserves a prestigious education at the same women's college his niece attends because he thinks she has a wonderful brain.
