Miami Beach, FL — Oolite Arts presents “Co-op Cohort!,” a black box video exhibition curated
by Miami-based media artist Barron Sherer, celebrating the artist-run legacy of the Alliance Film/
Video Cooperative—a pivotal 1990s collective that transformed Miami Beach’s Lincoln Road
into a hub for independent and experimental cinema.
Founded in 1992 by Mark Boswell and William Keddell with a modest City of Miami Beach
grant, the Alliance Film/Video Cooperative (known informally as “the Co-op”) made film and
video equipment accessible to the public at low cost, ran workshops and classes, and fostered a
vibrant scene for artist-driven production and exhibition. Supported by the ArtCenter/South
Florida (now Oolite Arts), the Co-op championed DIY collaboration over market logic, providing
a lifeline for South Beach filmmakers working outside commercial frameworks.
The Co-op’s programs—including the Anti Film Festival, Cinema Vortex, and The 60 Second
Film Festival—became defining outlets for experimental and underground moving-image art in
Miami. Through shared resources and an open ethos, the Co-op cultivated a community that
blurred the boundaries between teaching, production, and exhibition.
“Co-op Cohort!” reunites seminal works from that era, including films by Rey Parlá, David Jean
Schweitzer, Lázaro Amaral, Susanne Boswell, Barron Sherer, José Isaza, Rodney Ascher, Louisa
Van Leer, Syd Garon, Lenny Borruso, and Mark Boswell. Together, these works trace a lineage of
community-based moving image practices that helped define Miami’s independent film culture
and continue to influence its contemporary art landscape.
