Talk on “Bishop Mitsumyo Tottori Memorial Notebooks” by Professor Jessica Falcone, Kansas State University
Wednesday, June 19
11 a.m. Talk
Public Welcome - free admission
Dr. Jess Falcone, our sangha member who is Professor of Anthropology at Kansas State University, will be giving an educational lecture about Bishop Mitsumyo Tottori, a Buddhist priest in Hawaii who was not interned during WWII.
"This talk will discuss the memorialization work of one of the few Buddhist priests in Hawai'i that was not interned during the second World War. He kept records of his ritual memorialization efforts for the fallen soldiers. Last summer I searched the Smithsonian archive specifically for his records of the regional Kona losses during that conflict. I will show pictures of the memorial inscription records of the men on the "Kona Roll of Honor" for WWII, such as George Ikeda, Matsuo Furuuchi, Shiro Ikena, Hitoshi Kadooka, and more. I will also discuss why some local casualties of war were not included in the memorial notebooks, a story that relates to the tragic sinking of the Royal T. Frank ship in Hawaiian waters in 1942. "
Donations of refreshments are welcome. There will be tea after the talk.
