Written by acclaimed French playwright Yasmina Reza and translated by Christopher Hampton, ART premiered in Paris in 1994 before becoming an international sensation. It won the 1998 Tony Award for Best Play and has been staged worldwide.
The play follows three longtime friends—Serge (Todd Buteaux), Marc (Drew Hanks), and Yvan (Jason Woodworth)—whose bond is tested when Serge buys a minimalist painting: a large, all-white canvas with faint lines.
What begins as a debate over whether the painting is truly "art" spirals into a hilarious yet profound clash of egos, values, and insecurities. Their arguments reveal deeper tensions about honesty, loyalty, and the fragility of friendship, turning the painting into a metaphor for how we see—and forgive—the people closest to us.
