In 2016, Mike Shine became the first “Artist-in-Residence” for Asbury Park’s Wooden Walls Project. Since then, his connection with the city has only grown, and his visits have become an annual tradition. Over the years, Shine has gifted Asbury Park with a variety of vibrant public artworks. His creations include the large-scale mural “Havhest”—a winged sea-horse that majestically spans the Sunset Pavilion on the boardwalk. In addition to his public work, he’s also brought his distinctive style to Parlor Gallery in his solo show *East Carny Bastards*, and has painted a mural panel in the historic Carousel House, participating in numerous exhibitions held there over the past eight years.
This year, Mike returns to his roots with a fresh twist: a wearable art collection titled *Carny Clothes*. Each piece in this collection is crafted from upcycled shirts and pants, uniquely hand-painted and reimagined as one-of-a-kind, wearable works of art. Alongside his new line, Shine has created a site-specific installation at The Art Spot on the Asbury Park Boardwalk, setting the stage for his latest immersive experience.
Blending the eerie charm of old carnivals, Nordic myths, and a sense of hazy nostalgia, Shine’s works captivate audiences and have earned him exhibitions at prestigious venues, including SFMOMA, the Laguna Art Museum, and The Museum of Craft and Folk Art. Known for his multi-layered storytelling, Shine’s installations feature Flotsam—a carnival ringleader who serves as Shine’s personal Mephistopheles and the central character of his ongoing art “opera.” His pieces, often composed of house paint on driftwood, buoys, and other found objects, invite viewers into his world where whimsy and mystique merge.
The exhibition opens on Saturday, November 9th, with a celebration from 6–10 PM at The Art Spot, located at 1100 Ocean Avenue, on the Asbury Park Boardwalk. Join us for an evening of art, music, and magic as we step into the world of Mike Shine and his unforgettable creations.
